Liverpool receive boost in bid to retain Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold has a contract at Liverpool which is bound to end in June 2025, though it is expected that the two parties will get negotiations underway soon after Arne Slot has already spoken with him.
Real Madrid have been linked with a transfer for the right-back and are keeping very close tabs on his situation ahead of possibly pouncing on his signatures as a free agent next year.
The player has also not ruled out joining the Whites with his friendship with Jude Bellingham coming into play. Alexander-Arnold had reportedly enquired with his compatriot about what it is like being in the Spanish capital.
Fabrizio Romano has offered his two cents on the news in his Daily Briefing. The Italian journalist believes that the English duo’s relationship will not be a factor in influencing TAA’s future at Anfield. He said:
“As I always repeat, footballers are friends but it means nothing in terms of transfers. Just because Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham have been seen having dinner together… there’s really nothing more to say. They are great friends and that’s it. Real Madrid are monitoring Trent’s situation as reported back in March and the situation has absolutely not changed at all so far.”
Romano’s claims will undoubtedly make the Liverpool fans breathe a bit more easily, however, it is debatable if the Italian transfer insider is right in his reporting in this case.
A number of new recruits at clubs have said that they have spoken to existing players in the squad before committing to joining the team. Interestingly and quite coincidentally, the most recent such anecdote comes from Kylian Mbappe, who revealed that he was in touch with Vinicius Junior before eventually committing to joining Real Madrid.
At the same time, Bellingham’s and Alexander-Arnold’s close friendship is not to say that the Liverpool star will end up joining Los Merengues as there is still a long way to go until Madrid can even legally offer him a contract.
The Reds, however, need to start acting fast to tie him down to a new deal. Not only are they on the verge of losing Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah on free agencies next year, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is a homegrown talent and a contender for the captain’s armband at Anfield.
