Liverpool chief target Anthony Gordon set to be offered new contract at Newcastle United
Liverpool have shown interest in signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in recent weeks with Manchester City also keeping close tabs on the English international after his terrific season in 2023/24.
The former Everton forward scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions and was rewarded for his fantastic form with a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 earlier in the summer.
In a bid to fend off interest in his services, Newcastle United are set to open fresh contract negotiations with Gordon, according to TeamTALK, with Eddie Howe particularly keen on having him in the squad next season.
When quizzed about the player’s future at St. James’ Park, Howe was full of praise as he said:
“I’d welcome Anthony back with three arms if I had them. He’s an integral part of what we’re doing. We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He’s such an important player for us. We didn’t want to lose anybody. Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions but in those last few weeks it was very, very difficult.”
Gordon is currently out on vacation after spending an extended time at the European Championship as England reached the final of the tournament. Upon his return from vacation, it is expected for the Magpies to commence contract talks with him.
Liverpool as such would already have been priced out of his transfer after Gordon was slapped with a £100 million price tag by Newcastle United. However, they want to make absolutely sure of the player’s continuity with newer terms.
They are expecting to lose Miguel Almiron to an unnamed Saudi Arabian side in the upcoming weeks and hence, there is growing importance with keeping Gordon in the team.
As they are significantly owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Newcastle might be able to entice Gordon into staying by offering him a far higher wage than Liverpool could whilst also building the squad around him.
Gordon’s transfer to Anfield would also have been dependent on Luis Diaz’s future at the club as the 23-year-old is a left winger and as a result, he would not be a like-for-like replacement for the ageing Mohamed Salah.
Nonetheless, his situation will be worth a close eye on as Newcastle United could come under pressure to sell him this summer if Gordon turns down a contract extension with them to play for a Champions League side.

For the record, he has only two years left on his contract at the club. Thus, this year is the only realistic chance for the Magpies to command a high transfer fee for him as clubs will look to sign him for cheaper next summer.
