Liverpool star defender Sepp van den Berg understands that pre-season performances could prove him worthy of playing under Arne Slot
Sepp van den Berg is still uncertain about his future but believes that he could prove himself to be worthy to play for Liverpool. The 22-year-old delivered an eye-catching performance for Liverpool against Real Betis under new head coach Arne Slot in a friendly.
Van den Berg shifted from being an outcast to a potential defensive choice for the next season during the pre-season. The Dutchman gained the attention of the Reds fanbase for all the wrong reasons after his controversial statement earlier this summer.
Van den Berg questioned the price tag that Liverpool put on him while blaming the club for sabotaging his career. He self-contradicted in that interview, questioning the high price tag but considering himself worthy of playing for Liverpool.
However, the recent interviews showcased that the 22-year-old only wants to make sure that he receives sufficient game time and security. Van den Berg’s frank attitude endeared him with the fanbase once again as he highlighted his respect for the club.
The 22-year-old outlined (via The Athletic) his desire to prove to Slot that he is worthy of playing for Liverpool. He said:
“Maybe I stay, maybe I go. I am here now. Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world. It has always been my dream to play here and it still is my dream. I spoke with Arne on the first day and he said I have to show myself in pre-season. Of course, I have my own visions about things. I like to play. I am here to show the new manager that I am Liverpool-worthy. If he gives me a chance and likes me, there’s a big chance of me staying. But we are still early in the window so we will see what happens.”
Liverpool could save a lot of money if Van den Berg proves his worth, something that many Liverpool fans desire. A huge chunk of Kopites followed the Dutchman’s loan spell at FSV Mainz 05 last season as he delivered consistently.
The 22-year-old played a pivotal role in keeping the German club in the Bundesliga, avoiding a relegation scare dramatically. Liverpool currently possess captain Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah as the defensive options.

Van den Berg has shown an impressive development that matches his physical and technical qualities as a modern-day centre-back. The 22-year-old is dominant in the aerial and ground duels, comfortable on the ball to make good carries or build the play through passes from the backline.
Van den Berg’s potential stay under Slot could allow Liverpool to fully focus on other departments during the transfer window. The Reds are currently short in the defensive midfield position, gradually becoming a focal point of concern for this summer.
