Liverpool have “joined the race” to sign Sporting Lisbon forward Victor Gyokeres alongside Chelsea and Arsenal during the summer
Sporting Lisbon forward Victor Gyokeres is a transfer target for Chelsea and Arsenal with rumours suggesting Liverpool have joined the race. The 26-year-old enjoyed a prolific season under manager Ruben Amorim for the Portuguese club, helping them win the Liga Portugal title.
Gyokeres has established himself as one of the highly-coveted forwards with his clinical finishing and all-round abilities as an attacker. Standing at 1.87 metres, he enjoys the physical strength and athleticism to challenge any opposition defender, outmanoeuvring them in duels.
The 26-year-old fits the system that demands hard work and stamina from the frontman in the high-pressing style of play. In possession, he possesses the technical quality to move the ball directly with linkup plays and accurate passes to teammates.
His impressive composure outshined the Sweden international’s ability to make progressive carries to provide lethal finishing in attack. Gyokeres has only played a season for Sporting CP after moving there from Coventry City and commands a high value.
Furthermore, he has a strong relationship with Amorim and the availability of Champions League means he won’t rush a move. However, Football Insider (via Liverpool Echo) reported that Liverpool have joined Arsenal and Chelsea in the race to sign Gyokeres.
Liverpool have a strong attacking department but failed to convert chances last season in several crucial games. The situation drastically deteriorated during the latter stages of the season when they had a combined dip in form.
New head coach Arne Slot is currently assessing the options available to him but has backed the players he inherited. The change in tactical style of play could also favour the squad that only played in high attacking and direct style under Jurgen Klopp.

Slot prefers a more balanced approach with calmness in buildup than going direct all the time in attack and counter-attacks. With players like Diogo Jota, Nunez, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo capable of playing the sole main forward position, Gyokeres would be a luxury signing.
The 26-year-old has immense qualities but he is neither a necessity nor could he play in different positions like current Liverpool attackers. At the same time, the Reds are better off focusing on areas like the defensive midfield position that needs recruitment.
