Liverpool defensive midfielder Stefan Bajcetic expressed his long fitness struggles last season, calling it “the hardest year” of his life
Stefan Bajcetic is enjoying pre-season Liverpool camp under Arne Slot and took the time to reveal his last season’s struggles. The 19-year-old missed most of the last season after constantly struggling with fitness to play any part during the campaign.
Legendary manager Jurgen Klopp promoted Bajcetic during the 2022-23 season despite his young age as he showed immense promise. The Spaniard played many games during the season and impressed both fans and the media with his immense qualities and maturity.
However, Klopp opted to supervise Bajcetic’s game time after the over-exposure to the senior level caused him frequent injuries. The 19-year-old’s body was still developing and he needed proper guidance to make sure his career had longevity.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official site, Bajcetic expressed the mental and physical struggle he faced last season on the sidelines. He said:
“Really difficult, honestly – probably the hardest year I‘ve had so far, mentally and physically. But I got through it and it only made me stronger, both mentally and physically as well. I’m looking forward now to being back and enjoying what I’m doing.”
Bajcetic has bulked up since last year as Liverpool fans eagerly awaited his return to the team to compete. The Reds are short in number in the defensive midfield position with Thiago Alcantara departing the club recently.
Liverpool currently have Wataru Endo as the only specialist defensive midfielder and Bajcetic’s return is a welcome boost for them. Despite the good season from Endo, he has struggled with the pace of the Premier League at times.
Slot prefers a number-six who can contribute to the build-up play of the team alongside fulfilling the defensive duties. Bajcetic fits the profile perfectly for the new Dutch head coach as the youngster is both elegant and combative.

The 19-year-old has bulked up which should help him become more formidable in duels while shielding the backline. Bajcetic’s elegance is well documented as his swift first touch, ability to carry the ball and precision passing earned him many praises under Klopp.
Nevertheless, Slot needs to manage Bajcetic’s game time to avoid any reoccurrence of last season’s problems as his career is still young. The Reds could sign a defensive midfielder to compete with Bajcetic and provide him the opportunity to rest.
