Sepp van den Berg comments on Liverpool’s price tag on him

Liverpool signed Sepp van den Berg from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle in 2019. However, he has made only four appearances for the club, none of which have come in the Premier League.

The Dutchman enjoyed a great campaign on loan at Mainz in 2023/24, however, having played the highest number of minutes among outfield players in the Bundesliga and proving to be one of the best players statistically in the German top-flight.

He is said to be keen on playing regularly even next season, even if that means departing Anfield permanently this summer. Consequently, Liverpool have slapped him with a price tag of £25 million.

In an interview with Mail Sport (quoted by Mirror), the 22-year-old said the following regarding the asking price:

“I know in today’s market (high prices) will happen. For the price they want for me, hmm. Liverpool may think it is right as I had a good season, if they want £20-£25m that is a lot more. Hopefully we can find a way. Maybe I stay, maybe I go. The first reaction from me is that it was quite high! It is also a compliment. But it makes it difficult, £20m is majorly high.”

Sepp van den Berg’s remarks are startling as they are not going to favour Liverpool’s bid of getting a reasonable transfer fee for him. At the same time, he may have also jeopardised his own chances of moving on to greener pastures as interested parties could offer lower sums to the Reds in order to sign the player.

PSV Eindhoven ready to offer Liverpool €16 million for Sepp van den Berg this summer.
Sepp van den Berg believes Liverpool are asking too much money for his sale.

Liverpool though are in no great rush to raise funds and therefore, they can afford to wait for a satisfactory offer for the central defender. Hence, it is unlikely that they will budge from their set price.

As a matter of fact, the upcoming season could be the perfect time for the Dutch youngster to transition into prominence in the first-team as the club will be without Joel Matip and also start transitioning past Virgil van Dijk, who may leave in 2025.

Van den Berg is still only 22 and he has enough time to prove his credentials at Anfield. After a promising season at Mainz and with a busy schedule this season, there will be plenty of opportunities for him to play more minutes than he has so far.
