Liverpool defensive midfielder Wataru Endo highlighted the difference in tactical requirements under Jurgen Klopp last season to Arne Slot now
Wataru Endo revealed the pre-season priority for Liverpool, pinpointing small but crucial tactical differences between Arne Slot and Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool beat Real Betis 1-0 in their friendly showdown as the fans witnessed some subtle changes in the tactical style.
Many senior team players are currently unavailable for the pre-season camp, and more changes will likely occur later. Slot used two number 10s in his system against Betis but stated that a striker would take one position eventually.
The new Liverpool head coach inherited a strong squad from Klopp and the club has not added any recruit. The situation could change once Slot thoroughly assesses the squad to pinpoint the department that needs necessary recruits for him.
Speaking to the media (via BBC) before the friendly game against Arsenal, Endo revealed Liverpool’s pre-season priority and new tactics. He said:
“Yes, especially offensively. He wants us to play a little bit different than last season. I think it is a new challenge for me offensively, I always try to influence things offensively. We play a lot with the ball and have running sessions also. It’s pre-season so we need to work ahead of the new season but I am enjoying it a lot. Personally, he is very nice. He communicates well with the players and staff. I think it is too soon [to talk about trophies]. It will be a tough game, an important game for us, now it is pre-season and more about getting fit and learning how the manager wants us to play. We are talking about a lot of new tactics in the meeting as well. That’s our priority.”
Liverpool have Endo, Tyler Morton and Stefan Bajcetic as the natural options for the number six role in the squad. Morton’s future is still uncertain as Slot is assessing his progress after a successful loan spell with Hully City last season.
Meanwhile, Bajcetic has returned from his long-term struggle with fitness and needs proper supervision with his game time. The situation leaves Endo as the only natural option for the number six role, leaving Liverpool short on the department.

Despite Endo’s impressive overall performances last season, the Japan captain has struggled with the Premier League’s pace at times. Furthermore, he is 31 years of age and accepted more of a squad player than a regular starter. Liverpool have a month of transfer window left to change the situation as they practice patience and assessment for now.
