The Anthony Gordon transfer saga between Newcastle United and Liverpool casts doubt over the future of versatile defender Joe Gomez
Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool after he almost signed for Newcastle United in a swap deal for attacker Anthony Gordon. The Magpies approached the Reds in a player-plus-cash deal involving Gordon to ease their situation with profit and sustainability rules.
At first, Newcastle asked about Jarell Quansah in the proposed deal but Liverpool refused any chance of losing their prodigy. However, Daily Mail reported that Newcastle returned with a proposal to buy Gomez for £45m and sell Gordon for £75m.
The situation advanced to the point where clubs planned a medical at Leipzig for Gordon and Gomez during the Euro. However, Newcastle managed to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to solve the PSR problem as the deal collapsed.
Newcastle’s action and Liverpool’s interest in Gordon has shifted his head with the player’s desire to join his childhood club. The Magpies signed Gordon from Everton last summer and he made an instant impact despite the club’s struggle with form.
Gordon’s pace, reflexes, close control and dribbling skills stand out as he is a constant threat in the wide areas. Furthermore, the 23-year-old’s technical ability makes him superior to other pacy athletes who lack the end product.
Meanwhile, Gomez is still a crucial part of the Liverpool squad as he played an important role last season. The 27-year-old’s unique versatility allows him to play in multiple positions and maintain a high level of consistency.
Liverpool have already lost Joel Matip during the summer as his contract expire and losing another centre-back could leave a huge gap in the defensive department. The Reds chased Leny Yoro during the summer but the Frenchman’s priority to join Real Madrid shifted their attention.

Yoro joined Manchester United after LOSC Nice threatened him as they received twice the amount that the inexperienced centre-back was worth. If Gomez opts to leave Liverpool in search of first-team football, the Reds would require a worthy replacement. On the other hand, Gordon remains a target for Liverpool with a potential rift between the attacker and his current club after they openly tried to sell him.
