Liverpool legend Gary McAllister hypes Trey Nyoni after personally watching the squad train during the pre-season tour in the United States

Gary McAllister believes Trey Nyoni has hold his own against the senior team players at Liverpool during the pre-season training. Nyoni gained high praise from the Reds fanbase after his sensational performance in the friendly 1-0 victory over Real Betis.

The 17-year-old made his debut under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp last season after making a strong impression in the academy. He featured as a substitute in the FA Cup tie against Southampton during as Liverpool secured a convincing 3-0 victory.

The young Englishman became the youngest player in the club’s history to feature in the competition with that small cameo. Nyoni joined the Betis game in the 31st minute after coming on for Curtis Jones and played until the 72nd minute.

The 17-year-old displayed impressive qualities with 91% passing accuracy, one interception and winning one out of two duels. Speaking to Sky Sports, McAllister highlighted the impressive performance and confidence of Nyoni throughout the pre-season training and the friendly. He said:

“Young Trey was fantastic. He’s 17 years of age, in and amongst the senior players and he looks very, very comfortable. All credit to the academy and his belief in himself – it looked very easy, he’s very impressive. Just the way he receives the ball, and the thing for me is that he continually looks forward. In modern-day football it’s all about keeping the ball and not giving it away and playing a little bit safe, but I liked the way he turned and played forwards. It’s really encouraging.”

Player analysis: Trey Nyoni

Nyoni is still developing in height, physique and strength while he would prefer maintaining his agility and balance. Coaches need to supervise the 17-year-old closely to prevent overexposure to senior-level football and avoid injury concerns.

Nyoni’s strength is his ability to move in tight spaces with reflexes and first touch making him hard to tackle. The 17-year-old’s movement, reading of the game and dribbling skills allow him to carry the ball to safety, keeping possession.

The young midfielder uses both feet to control the ball and distributes precise passes with his technical skill. Nyoni plays as a number eight, contributing in both defensive and offensive phases of the game with his best work coming in building up the game.
