Liverpool head coach Arne Slot praised Harvey Elliott for his impressive performance in the pre-season friendly 2-1 victory against Arsenal
Arne Slot praised Liverpool attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott for his impressive performance against Arsenal in the 2-1 pre-season friendly victory. Elliott played in the number 10 role against the Gunners, the position that he also occupied in the previous friendly.
The Englishman provided two assists and created three big chances with 89% passing accuracy while earning substitution in the 72nd minute. The 21-year-old provided his first assist to legendary Mohamed Salah after several intricate passes from the backline by Liverpool players.
The style of play that Slot installed in his early days as the new head coach was positively visible. Elliot’s second assist allowed Fabio Carvalho to tap in and take the lead to 2-0 after the Englishman lobbed Arsenal’s defence.
Slot told the media (Liverpool FC’s official site) that Elliott made the most of the situation after a fantastic passing sequence. He said:
“He had two great assists, but what I believe is that the team created these assists for him as well. Playing out from the back, getting him in the right positions – or another No.10. Then it is up to him to bring the most of these situations and he did that today with two assists. If I am a bit hard on him, I think there were two or three other situations where he could have done better. But that’s what the team is doing for him; we make sure he and the other ones like Mo and like Fabio come in the right positions where they can show their quality. Harvey did that today with two good assists.”
Liverpool are still adapting to the new tactical style while emphasizing their fitness and readiness for the next season. However, the pre-season has allowed Elliott to showcase what he can add to Slot’s team while adapting to his strategy.
Liverpool have Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch as other strong options to play as a number 10. Despite the intense competition, the positive thing about Slot’s strategy is the reliance on narrow play, potentially involving many midfielders.
