Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes Darwin Nunez can fire Liverpool to Premier League glory
Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a world-class striker and has thrown his weight in behind Liverpool star Darwin Nunez. The treble-winner believes the Uruguayan is primed to explode and that his best years are ahead of him.
Despite Hojlund’s hefty £72 million transfer to Old Trafford in 2023, Yorke believes that Nunez, who joined Liverpool a year earlier, has more to offer. Hojlund’s first season at Manchester United was marked by mixed results. Although the team secured an FA Cup victory, the Danish striker managed to score just 10 league goals and has recently been sidelined for six weeks due to injury. The arrival of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36 million adds further competition for the 21-year-old.
Yorke, who played a pivotal role in United’s treble-winning team under Sir Alex Ferguson, has suggested that he would trade Hojlund for Nunez. He believes the Uruguayan forward has the potential to lead a team to Premier League glory.
Attributes of a Winner
In an interview with BoyleSports (h/t Mirror), Yorke highlighted Nunez’s physical attributes and potential. The 25-year-old has several dominant traits in his locker and as long as he can maintain his composure, there is no reason why he cannot develop into the best in his position in the Premier League.
“If I could, I’d swap Rasmus Hojlund for Darwin Nunez because he has more in his locker. He has pace, power, can head the ball, and has presence – he just needs to improve his finishing to be the best striker in the league.”
Yorke is confident that with the right training and experience, Nunez could become a top-tier striker. We have seen flashes of the Uruguayan’s brilliance at times but his inability to do it week-in, week-out raises questions about his ability to make a difference over the course of a season.
“All he has to do is train his finishing from different attacking positions and be calm and cool in games. That comes from anxiousness, but if he calms down, he will become a much better finisher,”
Yorke’s endorsement of Nunez is based on the belief that the Liverpool forward has all the necessary attributes and is still developing at the age of 25. He sees Nunez as a player who can transform into a lethal striker with improved composure in front of goal.
A future great?
Yorke believes that Nunez could be the “next best thing” in the striker position if he can refine his game. Whether he can indeed join the ranks of Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski remains to be seen. The potential is there, the time is now to fine-tune those skills and develop the finished product.
“This guy could be the next best thing in that position if he can polish up on a few things, and do the simple things well.”

While Manchester United fans may be backing Hojlund, Yorke’s endorsement of Nunez highlights the Liverpool forward’s potential to become one of the Premier League’s top strikers. With his physical attributes and room for development, Nunez could be a key player in Liverpool’s quest for future titles.
Yorke’s comments will not be music to the ears of United fans and Nunez can rub it in further if he goes on to prove the Red Devils legend a prophet in the years to come.
