Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool for the right price this summer
Liverpool star Joe Gomez has been a loyal servant to the club, whose importance to the squad cannot be underestimated, regardless of his injuries. Having been at Anfield since the Brendan Rodgers days, the centre-back has outlasted Jurgen Klopp and is now preparing to make an impact under Arne Slot.
A versatile player who can play anywhere along the back line, Gomez has also stepped in numerous times for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson in the wing-back spot. Having such a player who can fulfil multiple roles when needed is certainly a boost and will give the decision-makers options in a pinch.
While not a sure starter when all players are fit, Gomez’s importance to the team cannot be understated. However, according to Football Insider, he is now contemplating his future at Liverpool after being offered to Newcastle United as part of a swap deal for Anthony Gordon. The Reds indicated they would accept £45 million for the versatile defender. This would have allowed Gordon to move to Anfield for £30 million plus Gomez, matching Newcastle’s £75 million valuation of the winger.
However, the proposed deal fell through as Newcastle met their profit and sustainability requirements through other player sales. Despite this, Liverpool continue to monitor Gordon’s situation and remain interested in pursuing a deal before the transfer window closes.
The Reds are open to selling Gomez if the right offer comes in over the next four weeks. The 27-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015, has made 224 appearances for the club. His ability to play across the back line has been invaluable, and replacing him with a similar utility man could prove to be a challenge.
Gomez’s versatility is one of his standout attributes. He has proven capable in various defensive roles, making him a valuable squad player. His speed, strength, and defensive awareness have seen him thrive in different positions, providing crucial depth and flexibility for the team.
Despite not scoring any goals for Liverpool, Gomez has been a reliable presence in the defence. His performances have earned him a place in the England squad for Euro 2024, although he did not make an appearance during the tournament.
Liverpool’s new boss, Arne Slot, is leading the club through a period of transition. The team has yet to sign a new first-team player this transfer window, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the squad’s future. Selling a homegrown star like Gomez might not be the best move, especially given that he is in the prime of his career.

Retaining Gomez could provide Liverpool with stability in defence as they navigate this transitional period. His experience and versatility make him a valuable asset, capable of filling in various roles as needed. However, with Liverpool willing to sell him for the right price, his future at Anfield remains uncertain.
While potential departure could re-ignite the pursuit of Anthony Gordon, it is in our best interests to not sacrifice Gomez for it. After all Vigil van Dijk isn’t getting any younger while Jarell Quansah and Sepp van den Berg still lack experience. Selling Gopmez could leave us short of reliable options at the back going into the 2024-25 season.
