Arsenal could hand Liverpool a knockout punch in the race for Anthony Gordon
Liverpool have been consistently linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon during this summer transfer window. However, the Reds might face stiff competition from Arsenal who could derail the Reds’ pursuit of the English winger. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Newcastle had agreed on a £75 million deal to sell Gordon, with Joe Gomez set to move in the opposite direction for £45 million. Yet, the Magpies ultimately decided to pull out of the negotiations.
Instead of selling Gordon, Newcastle chose to balance their books by offloading Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh. They also signed Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest as part of this strategy. So far, Vlachodimos remains the only new player for whom Newcastle has paid a fee since the window opened. Their only other significant transaction involves the obligatory purchase of Lewis Hall from Chelsea.
Despite Gordon’s eagerness to move and Liverpool’s sustained interest, Newcastle have remained firm on keeping the England international. A transfer fee as high as £80 million, plus add-ons, might be required to change Newcastle’s stance at this stage. However, Arsenal’s interest in Newcastle players Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak could complicate matters further.
According to The Independent, there is speculation that Newcastle might allow a big-money exit to fund further signings, with Guimaraes, Isak, and Gordon being the prime candidates to fetch substantial sums.
Should the Gunners go big on either player, they will not just hand the Magpies a financial boost, effectively ending any need for them to cash in on Gordon, but they will also strengthen themselves. It would be a double whammy for us in what should be another close title race against the Gunners and Manchester City.
However, it is far from certain whether Arsenal will splash the cash. Newcastle are unlikely to sell on the cheap, and Mikel Arteta has indicated that they do not expect to make another massive signing similar to last summer’s £115 million acquisition of Declan Rice. For now, the ball is certainly in Liverpool’s court. Whether they can make the Magpies an offer they cannot refuse remains to be seen.

A return to Liverpool would complete Gordon’s redemption arc of sorts. The Merseyside lad was initially on the Reds’ books before being let go at the youth level. Having earned his stripes at Everton and now Newcastle, a big-money return to Liverpool to aid the club’s title push is certainly the stuff of dreams. Time will tell how this plays out.
