Liverpool are now scouting Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton
According to reliable journalist David Lynch, Liverpool are understood to be watching the growth of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
Adam Wharton has enjoyed a meteoric rise in stature in the last 12 months. After starring for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, Crystal Palace snapped him up in a deal worth up to £22m in the winter transfer window.
The central midfielder seamlessly adapted to the rigours of Premier League football like a duck to water, making 16 Premier League appearances for the Eagles. The youngster quickly became a regular fixture in Oliver Glasner’s side that beat the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in the second half of last campaign.
Wharton’s impressive performances in Palace colours saw him being called up to the England squad for Euro 2024, and although he didn’t feature in Germany, to be a part of the richly talented group was a massive achievement for the player given he was plying his trade in the Championship.
The Englishman’s performances in the Premier League haven’t gone unnoticed, with Liverpool among the clubs interested. And David Lynch is not ruling out a late Liverpool move for Wharton in this summer transfer window, although it would require top dollar to pull off a deal.
“Adam Wharton was definitely someone Liverpool watched at Blackburn, so they obviously kind of liked him around then, the recruitment staff, so I think that’s interesting,” Lynch told on the Born N’Red podcast (via Playback).
“The big problem there is obviously what would Palace ask for? They’ve only just signed him, he’s just become an England international since then, his stock has just gone up and up and up. The fee could be crazy and they would strike a hard bargain, but let’s see.
“I don’t think that’s one you can confidently rule out just on the basis that they’ve liked him in the past. I’m sure from what they’ve seen at Palace they won’t have gone off him.
“That’s one maybe to keep an eye on but that’s real tentative stuff to be honest. It’s a player they’ve liked in the past so let’s see if anything comes of that.”
Liverpool were credited with an interest in Wharton in November 2023 when he was playing for his hometown club Blackburn Rovers in the Championship. They missed out on his services as he joined Palace in January, but the Merseyside club have continued tracking his progress.
The Blackburn-born talent is exactly the kind of profile that the Reds require in the middle of the park. A strong presence at the base of the midfield, Wharton can progress the ball well, link play, create chances and even score goals. While he has yet to open his account for Palace, the midfielder definitely showed his eye for goal during his days with Blackburn.
As a result of his stunning rise, ceiling and entry into the England squad, Palace are expected to ask for a bomb for Wharton’s signature. Having lost Thiago Alcantara on a free transfer at the end of June, Liverpool ideally should be looking to sign a midfielder to maintain their squad depth. The Merseyside club have so far failed to bring in a single new player, instead preferring to focus on what they have.

With the transfer window having entered its final month, things could quickly change for Liverpool. However, in reality, we don’t expect the club to break the bank for the English prodigy this month considering how difficult it would be to convince Palace to sell, but Wharton certainly would be an amazing acquisition for Arne Slot’s red Army.
Touted to be better than Manchester United superstar Bruno Fernandes, Wharton has a bright future in the game. Let’s see if our club goes against all the odds and surprises the fans!
