Newcastle United enter the race for Liverpool target Federico Chiesa
Liverpool may face stiff competition from Newcastle United in their pursuit of Juventus winger Federico Chiesa. As the transfer window approaches its end, the race to secure the Italian international’s signature is heating up, with the Magpies making significant strides to bolster their squad.
Liverpool have been keen on adding Chiesa to their attacking ranks, recognizing his versatility and proven track record in Serie A. The 26-year-old, who scored ten goals and provided three assists in 37 appearances for Juventus last season, has been on the Reds’ radar as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Chiesa’s ability to play across the front line makes him an ideal candidate for Arne Slot’s high-intensity system.
The Italian international is entering the final 12 months of his contract with Juventus, making him an attractive option for several top clubs. However, recent developments have put Liverpool’s plans at risk. An offer of around £25m should see the deal get over the line.
According to Shields Gazette, Newcastle United, under the management of Eddie Howe, have also expressed strong interest in Chiesa. The Magpies are looking to add a winger and a versatile forward to their squad, and Chiesa fits the bill perfectly. With Miguel Almiron’s future at St. James’ Park uncertain, Newcastle are keen to secure a high-profile replacement.
The Magpies’ pursuit of Chiesa gained momentum after they successfully negotiated a deal worth around £15 million for Sheffield United star William Osula. The addition of Chiesa would further enhance their attacking options, making them a formidable force in the Premier League.
Juventus manager Thiago Motta has confirmed that Chiesa, along with other players such as Wojciech Szczesny, Weston McKennie, and Arthur Melo, are not part of the club’s future plans. Speaking after a pre-season friendly against Brest, Motta stated:
“Chiesa and all the other players not called up for today’s game are not part of the project. We have been clear with them, they have to find new solutions and new clubs as soon as possible. The decision has been made.”
This clear directive from Juventus opens the door for potential suitors, including Liverpool and Newcastle, to make their moves. While Liverpool have been proactive in their interest, the competition from Newcastle could complicate matters. The Magpies’ willingness to meet Juventus’ valuation and their ambition to strengthen their squad pose a significant challenge to Liverpool’s plans of securing the Italian.

Chiesa’s addition would not only provide depth but also add a new dimension to their attack. Given his proven ability to perform at the highest level, Chiesa would be a valuable asset in Liverpool’s quest for silverware. But if Chiesa moves to Tyneside and Almiron stays put, it remains to be seen if the Reds can then get the green light to sign Anthony Gordon.
However, with Newcastle United aggressively pursuing the winger, Liverpool must act swiftly and decisively. The Reds cannot afford to lose out on a player of Chiesa’s calibre, especially when he is available at a relatively reasonable price given the current market conditions.
