Everton are eyeing a deal for former Liverpool star Joel Matip

In a surprising turn of events, Everton have expressed interest in signing former Liverpool defender Joel Matip. The 32-year-old, who departed Anfield at the end of last season, is currently a free agent and has garnered attention from several clubs, including Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen. A player Jurgen Klopp held in high regard, Matip still has a couple of years of top-level football left in him.

Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 on a free transfer and became an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in Liverpool’s success, helping the club win every major trophy available. Despite his impressive contributions, Matip’s career at Liverpool was marred by injuries, limiting him to 201 appearances, 11 goals, and six assists.

Everton’s interest in Matip is particularly noteworthy given his strong ties to Liverpool. The Toffees are in need of bolstering their defensive options, especially with the potential departures of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate. Additionally, the future of Jarrad Branthwaite at Goodison Park remains uncertain, which could leave Sean Dyche’s side short of central defenders.

According to an exclusive by Caught Offside, Everton’s management has already met with Matip’s representatives to discuss a potential move. The club is prepared to make an offer should their defensive situation necessitate it. Everton’s pursuit of Matip is part of a broader strategy to ensure they have experienced and reliable options at the back as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season.

While Everton is keen on securing Matip’s services, they face stiff competition from Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen. Fulham are bracing for the possible departure of Tim Ream and sees Matip as an ideal replacement due to his experience and leadership qualities. The London club is eager to add Matip’s veteran presence to their backline to help stabilize their defence.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, led by coach Xabi Alonso, has made Matip a priority signing. The Bundesliga club hopes to finalize a deal for the former Liverpool star soon, aiming to bolster their squad with his expertise and experience as they gear up for the new season.

Seeing a former key player like Joel Matip potentially join local rivals Everton is a complex scenario. While Matip’s departure from Anfield was inevitable given his injury struggles and the need for Liverpool to rejuvenate their squad, his move to Everton would certainly add an intriguing twist to the Merseyside rivalry.

Matip’s professionalism and dedication have always been commendable, making him a cult hero on Merseyside. As a Liverpool fan, it’s bittersweet to see him move on, but we wish him the best in his future endeavours—just preferably not in an Everton shirt.
