Liverpool star Joe Gomez is keen to stay put at Anfield
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has made it clear that he has no intention of leaving Anfield this summer, despite recent speculation linking him with a move to Newcastle United. The rumours suggested that the Englishman could be part of a deal that would see Anthony Gordon join Liverpool.
Having joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Gomez has three years remaining on his contract. Despite this, there were reports that he might be used as leverage to facilitate a transfer for his fellow England international, Gordon. However, Gomez has reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool and is focused on becoming a key player under new head coach Arne Slot.
The speculation around Gomez’s future intensified after it was revealed that Newcastle were willing to pay £45 million for him as part of a deal that would see Anthony Gordon move to Anfield for £75 million. This proposal was part of Newcastle’s efforts to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules in June. However, the deal was shelved when Newcastle managed to balance their books by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
According to The Times (subscription required), despite the talks between Liverpool and Newcastle, discussions never advanced to the stage where Gomez engaged with Newcastle officials. Instead, the 27-year-old defender remained focused on his commitments with the England national team at Euro 2024 and had conversations with Slot about plans for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Gomez, Liverpool’s longest-serving player, returned for pre-season training alongside teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Cody Gakpo after their European Championship duties. His versatility and quality have made him a valuable asset for Liverpool, with the defender capable of playing in both full-back positions, at centre-back, and even as a defensive midfielder.
Under former manager Jürgen Klopp, Gomez’s reliability and adaptability were highly valued. His skills are expected to fit well with Slot’s possession-based style of play, making him one of five options at centre half, along with Van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konaté, and Nat Phillips.

His recent performances on Liverpool’s successful tour of the United States, culminating in a 3-0 victory over Manchester United, have only solidified his position. There is little that Gomez can get elsewhere that he does not already have Anfield.
Retaining Joe Gomez is a wise decision. His versatility, experience, and commitment to the club make him an invaluable asset, especially as the team transitions under new management. Gomez’s ability to adapt to various positions and his understanding of Liverpool’s playing style ensures that he will continue to be a key player in the squad. Letting go of such a talented and reliable defender would be a significant loss, particularly when the club aims to build a strong foundation for future success under Arne Slot.
