Liverpool have made Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi their summer’s No.1 midfield target
According to a report from The Athletic, La Liga side Real Sociedad expects Martin Zubimendi to agree a move to Liverpool this summer.
After a total lull in the opening months of the summer transfer window, Liverpool officials have supposedly intensified their efforts to bring in new players to bolster Arne Slot’s squad. it seems as though things could move along quickly—especially in the case of Martin Zubimendi after initial reports of the Reds’ interest in the Real Sociedad star.
The Merseyside giants are exploring a deal to sign the 25-year-old, who has a €60million release clause written in his contract. A potential move for Zubimendi could complicated by the hefty release clause if Real Sociedad insist on paying it in one go.
The aforementioned report adds that if the Spanish defensive midfielder asks to leave San Sebastian this summer, Sociedad will grant his wish. If he does agree to join Liverpool, he would become the club’s first signing under new head coach Arne Slot.
Zubimendi, who Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets holds in high esteem, made his first-team debut for Sociedad back in 2019 and has since gone on to rack up 188 appearances across all competitions, registering eight goals and seven assists. The Spain international is under contract until 2027 (Transfermarkt) at Anoeta, so the Spanish club have no real rush to sell him. If the Reds trigger the buyout clause, though, it will be out of the Basque-based outfit’s hands to keep hold of him.
Liverpool are expected to convince Zubimendi of their project under Slot and subsequently manage to agree to personal terms—a hurdle the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and other suitors failed to pass with the defensive midfielder previously showing no desire to exit his boyhood club. if the Premier League giants can lure Zubimendi away from Sociedad, it would represent a major coup of sorts.
The Reds lack quality and depth in the No.6 position, with Wataru Endo the only senior player in the position. But with Endo having turned 31, the club must address the gaping hole in the squad. And Zubimendi would be an excellent fit in a possession-based system Slot is trying to implement at Anfield.

The 25-year-old’s ability to sit the base of the midfield, dictate the tempo of play and break up opposition attacks could provide the defensive stability Liverpool are seeking. Zubimendi is old enough to make the No.6 position his own at Anfield while solving a gaping hole in Slot’s squad. All in all, we could make a statement signing by landing the Euro 2024 winner this summer.
