Liverpool have made an official approach for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi
Liverpool have intensified their pursuit of Spain’s talented midfielder Martin Zubimendi, signalling their serious intent to strengthen the squad this summer. With no signings made so far, the Reds are keen on bringing in a top-quality central midfielder, particularly a number six, as new boss Arne Slot looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park.
According to Florian Plettenberg via X, Liverpool have officially communicated their interest in Zubimendi to Real Sociedad. While a formal bid has yet to be placed, the Reds have been in contact with the player and his representatives, with the Spanish club granting permission for these discussions. This marks a significant step in Liverpool’s effort to secure the 25-year-old, though no direct negotiations between the two clubs have occurred at this stage.
As things stand, concrete talks are taking place between the player and Liverpool with Real Sociedad’s blessings. However, club-to-club negotiations are yet to take place. More so, Zubimendi is also yet to make his decision clear to Real Sociedad. However, should he give go, the presence of a release clause should strengthen Liverpool’s hand in talks.
Liverpool’s midfield was reinforced last summer with the addition of four new players, yet Slot remains unconvinced that the squad has a top-tier number six. Wataru Endo, who was signed by Jurgen Klopp last season, performed admirably, but Slot appears to view him more as a squad player moving forward. This has led to the pursuit of Zubimendi, who showcased his talent at the Euro 2024 Championships, particularly impressing in the final against England.
As Liverpool continue their pursuit of Zubimendi, the key hurdle remains the player’s £51.7 million release clause, which must be paid in full. Negotiations between the clubs have yet to begin, as the player has not made a final decision about his future. Richard Hughes, a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s recruitment strategy, is leading the efforts to convince Zubimendi to make the switch from his boyhood club to Anfield.

Despite rejecting several clubs before, Liverpool hold a special place in Zubimendi’s heart. His idol, Xabi Alonso left Real Sociedad for Liverpool and is still considered a legend at Anfield. Whether the allure of replicating the Spanish icon’s footsteps and success will entice Zubimendi remains to be seen.
