Liverpool could yet take advantage of Newcastle United financial concern to land Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe gives mixed messages while talking about Anthony Gordon amid interest from Liverpool this summer. The Magpies approached Liverpool with a player-plus-cash deal to sell Gordon due to their issues with Profit and Sustainability rules.

However, Liverpool immediately rejected the offer as Newcastle asked for Jarell Quansah to be part of that transfer deal. According to the Athletic, Liverpool and Newcastle reached the advanced stages of a deal that involved Gordon and Joe Gomez.

Liverpool agreed to sell Gomez for £45 million in that deal where Gordon joined them for a £75 million price. However, the deal failed once Newcastle managed to sell their youngsters, Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the PSR deadline.

Nevertheless, the situation turned Gordon’s head as he holds an affinity towards his childhood club and wants to play at Anfield. Furthermore, the Magpies are still under pressure financially and they need to sell their marquee players to navigate forward.

Speaking to the media (via Liverpool Echo), Howe reiterated Gordon’s commitment but accepted his club needs to sell big players. He said:

“His mind is on Newcastle. He has been exceptional, focused on his work, fitness, everything to do with this football club. No distractions. We are still in a position where Financial Fair Play will affect our decision making. No, we want to keep our best players, and we will fight tooth and nail to do that. That doesn’t mean there won’t be outgoings of certain players, because there has to be from our side.”

While Liverpool admires Gordon, their left attacking position is currently occupied by Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain want Diaz but any potential move this summer is up for speculation.

Liverpool might still choose to sign Gordon, given the busy schedule for next season. The Champions League format has changed which increases the number of games for every participating club. More so, Howe’s admission that Newcastle still have financial concerns is something we should hope to take advantage of.
