Liverpool are yet to offer Virgil van Dijk a new contract

According to The Times [Subscription Needed], Liverpool FC’s defensive stalwart, Virgil van Dijk, has revealed that the club has yet to offer him a new contract, despite his current deal entering its final year. The Dutch defender, who has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defence since his arrival in 2018, has expressed concerns about the lack of progress on his contract extension, especially as the new Premier League season looms on the horizon.

Van Dijk’s future at Anfield has become a point of interest, particularly following Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla in a pre-season friendly, which marked new head coach Arne Slot’s first game at the iconic stadium. Despite the positive result, the uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk’s contract situation adds an element of tension as the club prepares for the upcoming season.

Van Dijk took over as the Liverpool captain after Jordan Henderson left for Al-Ettifaq in the summer of 2023. The Dutchman did a solid job., leading the club to the Carabao Cup title, where he scored the winner in the final against Chelsea at Wembley. The Reds’ quest for a quadruple fell apart in the final couple of months as fatigue finally caught up with them.

The uncertainty over Van Dijk’s future is part of a broader concern at Liverpool, as key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are also approaching the final 12 months of their contracts. This situation places additional pressure on Liverpool’s management, particularly on the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who have faced increasing scrutiny over their handling of player contracts and transfers.

Liverpool are yet to offer Virgil van Dijk a new contract.

Despite his advanced age, Van Dijk’s importance to the team cannot be overstated. Since his arrival, he has been instrumental in transforming Liverpool’s defence, helping the club secure the Premier League title in 2020 and the Champions League in 2019. As one of the best centre-backs in the world, his leadership and defensive prowess are vital to Liverpool’s success.

The Dutchman was linked with a move to the Middle East and also to Atletico Madrid earlier in the summer. With the deadline fast approaching, it will be curious to see what moves Liverpool make in the market. Selling Van Dijk now would be inimical given that we will also need to bring in a suitable replacement, one that is easier said than done. Despite his decline, Van Dijk remains a player whose traits will be difficult to replicate.
