Martin Zubimendi rejects the chance to join Liverpool
Liverpool had been looking to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad this summer. At one point, it had seemed that they would eventually get the transfer done and dusted.
However, The Times has reported that the midfielder has turned down the chance to join Anfield and will continue his career on the books of Real Sociedad. He remains committed to succeeding at his boyhood club, where he has remained over the last few years by rejecting the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well.
Zubimendi’s denial at pursuing a transfer to Liverpool comes as a major setback for the Reds. There would have certainly been confidence in the club’s backroom that the Spaniard would join, more so after a fabulous and triumphant Euro 2024 with Spain.
The transfer will not go through though and as per Paul Joyce of The Times, it does not even look likely that the Merseyside outfit would be looking for alternate options. Liverpool are still the only club in the Premier League so far this summer who are yet to sign a player in the transfer window.
Arne Slot would understandably be frustrated at the lack of intent Liverpool have shown in the transfer market over the last couple of months, whereas Virgil van Dijk also voiced his concern recently regarding a dearth of new arrivals in the team.
Their decision to not sign a midfielder is extremely debatable as the club’s engine room has seen a number of players depart over the last two or three years. Yet, the most noteworthy signings remain only Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szboszlai, of which the latter is far more useful in an offensive role.
With Arsenal adding some potion to their squad from last season and Manchester City being arguably the world’s best team regardless of newer signings, Liverpool’s lack of transfer activity could put them out of contention for the Premier League very early on.

There are still over two weeks left in the transfer window and it remains to be seen if the Reds sign any outfield player by Deadline Day. Giorgi Mamardashvili’s signing could be done soon although he is likely to be loaned out immediately.
