Jamie Carragher wants Liverpool to compete for all trophies next season under Arne Slot as they did under Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool defender argued that the squad that Slot inherited has the strength to compete in multiple competitions simultaneously.
Furthermore, Carragher believes that the Reds can win a trophy next season under Slot to kickstart his tenure at Anfield. Slot used July to assess the squad as the process faced some inevitable obstacles due to international tournaments this summer.
Slot alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes used patience as their biggest virtue but they are now making transfer moves. While the transfer activities involving both incoming and outgoings will continue until the end of August, Liverpool’s season begins soon.
The Reds will face newly-promoted Ipswich Town in the first Premier League game away at Portman Road Stadium this Saturday. The pre-season friendlies have given fans some idea about the potential starting eleven and a taste of Slot’s tactical playing style.
Speaking to Sky Sports (via The Mirror), Carragher highlighted the squad’s strength as the reason for his hopeful ambitions. He said:
“You’ve got a new manager and of course, you have to give him time to adapt, but I want us to challenge on all fronts, we’re Liverpool. We have a realistic chance of winning the Champions League, and that’s the pressure of managing Liverpool. I’m sure the manager will be thinking that he needs to get top four, and it would be lovely to win a trophy – that would be a great season. I just want us to make sure that we compete for everything. We didn’t win everything under Jürgen Klopp, but we competed.”
Liverpool fans and pundits close to the club enjoyed the pre-season friendly as Slot’s style provided them with entertainment and efficiency to get results. The Dutchman has a vast difference in his tactics compared to his predecessor despite having a similar philosophy in playing attractive football.
Klopp’s tactical method of attack involved directness and more risk with high intensity in possession and during the counterattacks. Whereas, Slot uses possessional play and a balanced approach, making sure that the players are press-resistant while emphasizing attack.

The 45-year-old’s variation and discipline provided fans with something new and different but equally attractive and entertaining as Liverpool progressed. Nevertheless, the Liverpool squad still needs time to fully adjust to Slot’s approaches and demands. The fans and Carragher need to have patience with the manager and this team but we agree with the former defender’s point about Liverpool competing for everything.
