Another name that could potentially leave the club in favour of regular first-team football is defender Sepp van den Berg. The Dutchman spent last season on loan at FSV Mainz 05 and enjoyed a massive developmental jump, attracting several clubs.
The 22-year-old’s ambitions are understandably big as he wants to continue the progress after playing an important role in Mainz’s survival. Van den Berg has to compete with Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in available defensive positions.
At the same time, Liverpool needs a defensive signing themselves as the season will possess more fixtures this time. The change in the Champions League format involves more fixture that changes the way the clubs would approach the season.
Liverpool needs to use smart squad rotation to keep the quality of performance high and maintain that consistency. If Van den Berg stays, he could gain a sufficient amount of football through the rotation and challenge the first-team starters.
According to Fabrizio Romano (via X), Liverpool have maintained that Van den Berg’s price tag is £20m despite low proposals. BBC reported that PSV Eindhoven offered €10m (£8.4m) for the 22-year-old which Liverpool sternly rejected.
