Liverpool are yet to open their account in the summer transfer window with the new Premier League campaign scheduled to start from Friday evening.
The lack of signings since the start of the window to back the new boss Arne Slot has frustrated most of the fanbase. However, it appears things could finally change in the final weeks, despite top midfield target Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi rejecting a move to Anfield.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have scheduled another meeting with Valencia to discuss the possibility of signing goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The player is keen on a move, and if the goalkeeper signs for the Reds this summer, he will be loaned out.
“One more meeting has already been scheduled for Liverpool to discuss Giorgi Mamardashvili deal with Valencia,” Fabrizio Romano tweeted from his official X account.
“Up to the Reds as he’d be loaned out and Georgian GK is keen on this solution.”
This development comes after Liverpool opened talks with Valencia to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili for a fee in excess of €30m at the start of the week. The Reds have been monitoring the Georgian shot-stopper for some time and it seems they are now ready to intensify their efforts to sign him, despite the goalkeeping position not requiring strengthening.
The release of Adrian at the start of June means Arne Slot has two capable goalkeepers in his roster in Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher. Alisson has been the undisputed No.1 at Anfield since arriving from AS Roma six years ago, and with his colossal displays for Liverpool, he has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the world.
However, the Brazil international has been a rumoured target for the cash-rich Saudi Pro League clubs all summer. Anything can happen at this stage in the transfer window, and as the Saudi Arabian clubs have flexed their financial muscle by luring top players from the Premier League and other leading leagues in the last couple of years, Liverpool are potentially planning to secure a long-term replacement for Alisson.
Mamardashvili, in that regard, fits that criterion perfectly. The 23-year-old has been rated as one of the best young goalkeepers in the continent following his rise in stature in the last 15 to 18 months at Valencia. He was one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing 2023/24 campaign for Valencia which saw them finish ninth in the La Liga table.
Off the back of a strong campaign in La Liga, Mamardashvili impressed at Euro 2024 with his shot-stopping ability, cat-like reflexes, command in the box and leadership skills. The Georgian is now open to ending his time at the Mestalla and joining Liverpool.
The glovesman would be loaned out if he joins, as Mamardashvili justifiably would not play second fiddle to Alisson. By the time Alisson has aged further and could be phased out, Mamardashvili would be ready to return on loan and immediately succeed the Brazilian.

That being said, it is now up to the Reds whether they table an offer for the Euro 2024 star. A young goalkeeper who is destined for the top, our club spending over €30m now for his signature would represent one of the shrewdest long-term investments.
