Real Madrid cool interest in Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is in the final year of his contract at Anfield with no pen to paper being put on fresher terms to prolong his stay beyond 2025.

Real Madrid were previously said to be interested in his signing by several reliable sources. Perhaps a transfer was not possible this summer due to their spending on Kylian Mbappe’s signing-on bonus but there was an even more intimidating prospect in front of the Reds, which was losing Alexander-Arnold as a free agent next year.

Daily Mail has eased such concerns by reporting that the Whites have cooled off their interest in signing the Scouse talent. However, the report adds that the player’s future still remains uncertain owing to the club’s delay in agreeing to a contract extension with him. As things stand, Alexander-Arnold is a day closer to free agency in less than a year.

Liverpool have not shown any sort of urgency in the transfer market throughout this summer, so them not extending Alexander-Arnold’s contract indicates a lax atmosphere in the hierarchy. While admittedly the player was busy during the summer at Euro 2024, there is no hint of his agents being in talks with the Merseyside outfit either.

With the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk heavily linked with transfers to Saudi Arabia once their contracts end in 2025, the Reds can ill-afford to let go of a leadership figurehead like Alexander-Arnold too, not least considering that he is a homegrown talent as well.

Real Madrid may presently be happy with Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez but it would be absolutely no surprise if they are back in the race for Alexander-Arnold early next year should the defender’s contractual situation remain at loggerheads.

And in the unwanted event that he departs the club as a free agent, there would be nobody to blame but the board.

The transfer window shuts in slightly more than a fortnight. Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool for the upcoming season seems secure but the Reds need to act fast to avoid letting him walk away following this season.
