Liverpool are the only Premier League club to have failed to bring in a single new face in this summer transfer window thus far. Fans have been extremely disappointed with how the club has handled the transfer dealings this summer, especially on the front of the incoming.
The Reds are set to usher into a new era under Arne Slot on the coming weekend against newly-promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road. And given there have been no fresh additions to the squad, Arne Slot will have to make do with the squad that he inherited from the legendary Jurgen Klopp.
On Tuesday, Liverpool fans would have been taken aback after coming across reports of Luis Diaz reaching a five-year agreement with defending Premier League champions Manchester City. Spanish outlet El Chiringuito reported that Manchester City are ready to pay Liverpool €70 million for the Colombia international.
However, Athletic reporter James Pearce took to his official X account to squash those rumours, stating that Liverpool have not been approached by any club for Luis Diaz.
“Liverpool have had no approaches for Luis Diaz from any club #LFC,” Pearce tweeted.
Luis Diaz’s long-term future at Anfield has been in doubt for a while. After Jurgen Klopp bid farewell, it’s no secret the 27-year-old would be open to a move away from Liverpool, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain having been keen on the winger’s services all summer. For their part, the Reds have slapped a €58 million price tag on the flashy winger’s head.
Barcelona have been focused on signing Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams after his dazzling displays for Spain at Euro 2024. However, with no breakthrough in negotiations for Williams, the Catalan giants could turn to Diaz, who was excellent in Slot’s first friendly game at Anfield against Sevilla on Sunday and even bagged two goals in the 4-1 win.
Rumours of Manchester City reaching an agreement with Diaz were extremely bizarre, perhaps leaving both the fanbases in splits. James Pearce, the Liverpool reporter for the Athletic, brought word from Anfield that there is no truth to El Chiringuito’s strange claim.

This would rule out the latest rumour swirling in the media over Diaz’s transfer to Man City, who appear to be well-stocked on the left side of their attack with both Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish competing for a spot in Pep Guardiola’s first XI. The Colombian star may have not fully delivered the goods consistently but he is someone who brings the ‘X factor’ on the pitch for the Merseyside giants and Slot will want to get the best out of him.
As things stand, then, Diaz is expected to be a part of Liverpool’s travelling squad for our season-opener against Ipswich Town.
