With two-and-a-half weeks until the transfer window closes, it remains to be seen whether there will be any movement regarding incomings at Liverpool. The Merseyside giants are the only team in the top European competition to make no signings so far despite the arrival of new head coach Arne Slot.

The Reds were hit with a massive blow in their plans to reinforce Arne Slot’s squad ahead of the new season after receiving confirmation that top target Real Sociedad Martin Zubimendi has rejected a move to Anfield. The No.6 position has emerged as a priority for the club, but having failed to persuade Zubimendi to Anfield, Slot and Co. may have to find an in-house solution for the problem.

In addition, the Merseysiders are also seemingly in the market for a new left-back. According to Hungarian football journalist Bence Bocsak, Liverpool are still interested in Club Brugge left-back Maxim De Cuyper.

A youth product of the Club Brugge academy, Maxim De Cuyper made his first-team debut in February 2020 and with time, maturity and experience, he has grown into one of the exciting left-backs in the Belgium Pro League. The 23-year-old enjoyed his breakout campaign for Club Brugge this past year, contributing five goals and 15 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions.

Liverpool scouts were in attendance to watch De Cuyper in action for Club Brugge against PAOK in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League in Belgium back in April. While Liverpool haven’t really been concretely linked with the player since then, Bence Bocsak thinks otherwise. The Hungarian reporter has taken on his X account to state that the Reds’ interest in the Belgian hasn’t vanished.

Surprisingly, Bocsak’s claim comes right after Club Brugge tied De Cuyper down to a new contract until the summer of 2028. This is perhaps because the Belgian side are wary of growing interest from elite European clubs in their homegrown talent and have quickly secured his future.

Andy Robertson has struggled with fitness in the last two seasons at Liverpool

De Cuyper hasn’t been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, but with Andy Robertson not getting any younger and struggling with injuries in the last two seasons, and his deputy Kostas Tsimikas cannot be viewed as a long-term successor, Liverpool would be wise to invest in a new left-back this summer.

De Cuyper, an attacking player with solid technical skills, ball control and vision, could be a great fit for Slot’s side. A left-back by trade, the Belgium international can cover at right-back as well as in left midfield when required, and such versatility would be a big plus for the Premier League side lacking quality depth in the squad.

At 23, the Knokke-Heist native has the required ingredients in his game and the potential to become Robertson’s long-term replacement. Despite De Cuyper extending his contract very recently, we must at least test Club Brugge’s resolve with an audacious bid before the transfer window slams shut.
