Liverpool are not expected to make a move for Johan Bakayoko this summer
In the midst of another bustling transfer window, Liverpool fans hoping for a fresh attacking face may need to temper their expectations. Despite rumblings in the transfer market, the Reds are not expected to make a move for PSV Eindhoven’s rising star, Johan Bakayoko, before the transfer window slams shut on August 31st.
Liverpool have been closely monitoring the 21-year-old winger’s development since January. Pete O’Rourke, a senior correspondent for the site, revealed on the latest Inside Track podcast via Football Insider that the club has been impressed with Bakayoko’s performances. However, the Reds are unlikely to table a bid this summer.
High Price Tag and Well-Stocked Attack
PSV, fully aware of Bakayoko’s potential, are reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £35 million. While this may be a reasonable sum for a player of Bakayoko’s calibre, Liverpool’s recruitment team isn’t keen on splashing the cash right now, primarily due to the club’s already formidable array of attacking talent.
With Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Núñez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Díaz all vying for spots in the starting XI, the need for another winger has understandably fallen down the pecking order. Unless there’s an unexpected departure—most notably, if Salah were to leave either this year or the next—the likelihood of Liverpool pursuing Bakayoko this summer remains slim.
A Future Prospect?
That’s not to say Bakayoko isn’t on the radar. Liverpool’s interest is genuine, and the young Belgian has certainly caught the eye with his electric performances for PSV. Last season, he racked up an impressive 14 goals and 14 assists across 48 appearances, a contribution that earned him a spot in Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad.
Although his minutes in the tournament were limited, Bakayoko’s potential is undeniable, and it’s easy to see why elite clubs across Europe, including Liverpool, are watching closely. If Salah were to leave Anfield, Bakayoko could well be a top target to fill the void left by the Egyptian King.
Priorities Elsewhere
For now, Liverpool’s priorities lie elsewhere. The focus is firmly on reinforcing other areas of the squad, particularly with the search for a new deep-lying midfielder and a left-sided centre-back. The club is keen to ensure they make the right moves in the market, rather than being pressured into hasty decisions.
The recent sales of Fabio Carvalho to Brentford and the anticipated exit of Bobby Clark have given Liverpool some financial leeway. However, the club’s recruitment strategy remains meticulous. They are determined to avoid unnecessary signings, especially when their attacking lineup is already brimming with quality.

As the transfer window draws to a close, Liverpool fans might have to wait a little longer to see new faces at Anfield. But rest assured, the club’s recruitment team is working diligently behind the scenes, ensuring that any new arrivals are the perfect fit for the squad—whether that’s this summer or further down the line.
This summer may not see Johan Bakayoko donning the famous red shirt, but with Liverpool’s watchful eye on the market, the future always holds possibilities. For now, the Anfield faithful can remain confident in the club’s measured approach to transfers, knowing that the right deals will be made at the right time.
