Liverpool are steadily inching closer to signing Giorgi Mamardasvili
With less than two weeks remaining in the summer transfer window, Liverpool find themselves in a unique and somewhat unsettling position. Despite being one of Europe’s top clubs, the Reds have yet to secure a single signing this summer, making them the only club in Europe’s top five leagues in such a predicament. As the clock ticks down, fans and pundits alike are growing increasingly anxious about the club’s transfer strategy.
The Reds led the Premier League table for the majority of last season, only to falter in the crucial final weeks. To mount a serious challenge for the title this season, it’s clear that new manager Arne Slot needs to be backed with top signings. The team’s lack of activity in the transfer market so far has been puzzling, but there is finally a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
Two Steps Forward
The closest Liverpool have come to securing a signing this summer is with Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. However, even if this deal is finalized, the young shot-stopper won’t be featuring for Liverpool in the current campaign. Instead, he is expected to spend the season on loan at Bournemouth.
According to the latest updates from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have already ticked two crucial boxes in their pursuit of Mamardashvili. Romano revealed on his Here We Go podcast that the Reds have reached an agreement with the player himself, and they have also received the go-ahead from Bournemouth to complete the transfer, allowing Mamardashvili to develop further in the Premier League before joining Liverpool in 2025.
“This is not a deal for this summer but a deal for summer 2025 with Mamardashvili to go to Bournemouth (on loan) and then to Liverpool in summer 2025. They are still working on that one. They have an agreement with Mamardashvili, they have the green light from Bournemouth to proceed.”
The Final Hurdle: Negotiating with Valencia
While the player and the loan destination are secured, the final box remains unchecked—reaching an agreement with Valencia. Negotiations with the Spanish club have proven to be challenging. As Romano pointed out, Valencia’s owner, Peter Lim, is known for his tough stance in negotiations, much like Atalanta in Italy. This has made the process more complicated than Liverpool would have hoped.
The sticking point is the transfer fee. Valencia have set an asking price of €40 million for Mamardashvili, a figure that Liverpool have yet to meet. The advisers of the Euro 2024 standout are reportedly pressing hard to ensure that a final agreement is reached, but as of now, the deal hangs in the balance.

With time running out, Liverpool’s pursuit of Mamardashvili could be the defining moment of their summer transfer window. Securing the Georgian goalkeeper would not only mark their first signing of the summer but also set the stage for a strategic long-term investment. However, the deal’s success hinges on Liverpool’s ability to navigate the final negotiations with Valencia.
The pressure is on Liverpool to get this deal over the line and potentially lay the groundwork for further signings. Hopefully, we also address other areas of the squad that needs immediate strengthening.
