The transfer window is heating up as we come close towards the deadline day and Liverpool fans are getting restless. Liverpool are the only club in Europe without a single incoming signing so far this summer despite the managerial change.
Fans and pundits believed that new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot will receive the right backing to fill some vulnerabilities. While Slot inherited a formidable squad from former boss Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s late struggle last season remains as a warning.
Another important issue that the Reds need to address is the contract situation involving three of their top first-team players. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk are playing in the last year of their contract this season.
Liverpool operates under strict restrictions to maintain financial health that keeps them away from controversies like some of their rivals. They cannot afford to lose their three top players for free regardless of their age, given the reputation they have.
In the middle of such chaos certain social media engagement accounts that love to stir up the fanbase negatively. People run these accounts and unethically pretend to be Liverpool fans or professionals associated with the club.
One of these accounts in platform X named “Transfer News Live” with 2.5 million followers crossed all the ethical lines. They misquoted an article by Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle to induce panic among the Liverpool fanbase. The actual article quote wrote:
“That said, could Liverpool reignite their previous interest in Gordon? It’s not beyond the realms of possibility with, as things standing, Mohamed Salah set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. As was shown with the interest in Yoro, the Reds are already planning for the next generation.”
Whereas, Transfer News Live cited Liverpool Echo as the source while misquoting them completely to gain engagement. They wrote:
“Mo Salah plans to leave Liverpool at the end of his contract next year! At the moment, he doesn’t want to renew.”
Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst used his X account to address the false statement to raise awareness among the Liverpool fanbase. He wrote:
“This just isn’t true. A total misrepresentation of what was written, going out to 2.5m followers.”
The recurring theme of creating false narration and building up crowd reaction against certain players alienated Darwin Nunez last season. Such accounts damage the reputation of the fanbase while the new followers are most susceptible to their lies.
