Liverpool retain interest in RB Leipzig star Mohamed Simakan
Liverpool continue to retain their interest in RB Leipzig’s versatile defender, Mohamed Simakan, as the transfer window edges closer to its conclusion. According to Philipp Hinze via X, while the Reds’ pursuit of the Frenchman is not yet “advanced or concrete,” Simakan remains firmly on their radar as they search for a replacement for Joel Matip. However, they are not alone in this pursuit, with Juventus also keeping a close watch on the talented centre-back.
Simakan, who joined RB Leipzig in 2021 from Strasbourg, has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable defenders. Over the past three years, he has developed into a key figure at Leipzig, making 42 appearances last season and contributing three goals and four assists across all competitions. Despite being content at Leipzig, the 23-year-old is reportedly open to taking the next step in his career, and Liverpool could be the club to provide that opportunity.
Simakan’s potential departure would mark a significant move in his career, and with interest from top clubs across Europe, he has the chance to test himself in one of the continent’s elite leagues. Liverpool, in particular, are keen to strengthen their defence as they prepare for life after Joel Matip, who has been a stalwart at Anfield but is approaching the latter stages of his career.
RB Leipzig, known for their shrewd business in the transfer market, have placed a price tag of around €40-€45 million (£34m/$44m-£38m/$50m) on Simakan. This valuation reflects the 23-year-old’s importance to the team and his potential for further growth. While this figure may seem steep, Liverpool’s need for a reliable, versatile defender could justify the investment.
However, Liverpool are not the only club eyeing Simakan. Serie A giants Juventus have also expressed interest, and their involvement could complicate Liverpool’s pursuit. With the Italian club also looking to bolster their defensive options, the competition for Simakan’s signature could heat up in the final days of the transfer window.
Simakan’s versatility makes him an ideal candidate for Liverpool’s defensive lineup. Capable of playing both as a center-back and right-back, Simakan would offer Jurgen Klopp flexibility and depth in a defense that has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons. His proven track record in the Bundesliga, combined with his physical presence and ball-playing ability, aligns well with Liverpool’s high-intensity, pressing style of play.
While the deal is not yet close, the 24-year-old’s potential arrival would be a significant boost for Liverpool as they aim to refresh their squad. With no new additions so far this summer, the pressure is on the Reds to act decisively in the final days of the window. Securing a player of Simakan’s calibre would not only address immediate defensive needs but also provide a long-term solution.

The Reds’ need for defensive reinforcements is clear, and Simakan’s readiness for a new challenge could make him the perfect fit. However, with Juventus also in the mix and Leipzig unlikely to let their prized asset go cheaply, Liverpool must decide whether to meet the asking price or risk missing out on a key target.
