The transfer saga involving Liverpool and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi ended in a big disappointment for the Reds fanbase. The situation has divided the fanbase in half with one side practising patience and belief while the other is targeting the management and ownership.
It is indeed a daunting task to add any player to a senior squad that already has a good depth. New head coach Arne Slot inherited a strong group of players from Jurgen Klopp this summer with the potential to improve.
During the Premier League opener against Ipswich Town, Slot did not use first-teamers Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott. This decision in itself shows that Slot has a very strong squad that only faces a potential injury crisis threat.
There is a counter-argument which many anxious fans, who are unhappy with the transfer decisions, have made throughout this summer. They argue that some positions like the number-six, left-back and left central defence require recruitment after last season’s late downfall.
However, Liverpool always operates with patience and doesn’t fall back on alternatives if they fail to sign their priority player. Zubimendi had the quality to straightaway fit into Slot’s style of play and influence the squad positively.
According to Fichajes, Liverpool wants Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes after failing to sign Zubimendi which contradicts other news. Newcastle needs to sell some of their star players to balance their finances after recently surviving the PSR situation.
Liverpool could capitalize on their situation and sign the Brazilian who fits the profile they seek in a number six. However, a lot will depend on the Magpies’ price demand for the player who is already earning £160,000 per week.
Newcastle and Liverpool have communicated with each other over the deals involving other players during this window. However, none of the deals became fruitful despite the interest from both parties on respective players.

Liverpool wanted Anthony Gordon while Newcastle asked for indispensable Jarell Quansah as part of the deal. The Reds and Magpies later negotiated a deal involving Gordon and Joe Gomez which ended without an outcome. While it is highly unlikely that this news is true, Guimaraes has the quality to take the number six role at Liverpool as the Reds seek quality over quantity.
