Arne Slot had an interesting introduction to the Premier League against Ipswich Town with Liverpool. The Reds were not at their best in the first half of that game, understandably still new to the Dutch coach’s tactical setup which in itself was quite interesting. Things changed in the second half though.
If Liverpool are going to play football like they played the second half against the Tractors, Merseyside fans are going to be excited about what lies ahead of them. On Sunday, they welcome Brentford to Anfield as they look to get one over Thomas Frank’s side.
Brentford are a counter-attacking side and with Liverpool preferring to keep possession under Arne Slot, this game could play into each other’s strengths. It could come down to who among the two teams takes their chances and obviously, the difference in quality on the paper.
Here is how we at TKT think Arne Slot is likely to set his side up against Brentford as they welcome the Bees to Anfield on Sunday
Alisson Becker should continue with his role in between the sticks. In front of him, the defence could see one change. Trent Alexander-Arnold is nailed in at right-back. Same with Andy Robertson on the left. Captain Virgil van Dijk is immovable from defence. Jarrel Quansah started against Ipswich but was hooked at half-time for Konate and the Frenchman should walk into the XI against Brentford.
There is no reason for Slot to change his midfield that played the entire 90 minutes against Ipswich. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are likely to start as two holding #6s and need to be aware of their movement on the pitch against a high-pressing Brentford team. Dominic Szoboszlai is nailed in for the #10 role.
Mohamed Salah is nailed in for the right-wing and Luis Diaz is likely to start on the left. Diogo Jota, after his goalscoring performance against Ipswich, is likely to start as the focal point in attack yet again, meaning that Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez will have to settle for a spot on the bench.
Gakpo got minutes last game, replacing Jota but Nunez was an unused substitute. Missing out two games in a row will send the rumour mill into overdrive at Anfield and it remains to be seen if Slot gives the Uruguayan international his first minutes of the season against the Bees.
Brentford vs Liverpool has seen some classics played out in the past couple of seasons. Keeping in line with that trend, expect an open and attack-minded game full of goals as the two sides battle it out for their second win of the season at the Anfield on Sunday.
