Liverpool have started the era under Arne Slot with an emphatic 0-2 Premier League victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town. They face Brentford next on Sunday at Anfield with the expectation to build important consistency while ignoring the transfer activities.
The Reds are the only club in Europe’s top leagues to have zero incoming signings for the senior team. Liverpool fans are splitting in half due to the way the club has handled their transfer business this summer.
After last season’s late dip in form, fans wanted the club to address some glaring issues that they faced. Liverpool struggled with a severe injury crisis which forced them to use academy players in several important games last season.
Furthermore, some players continued to struggle with form as many fans on social media demanded more competition in those areas. Liverpool’s goalkeeping department is the only area that remained immune to any criticism throughout the last season.
Alisson Becker and his number two Caoimhin Kelleher are two formidable goalkeepers who have delivered consistently for the Reds. Kelleher hinted that he could leave the club this summer to become a number-one goalkeeper at some top club.
The Irishman has stayed at the club despite the admiration from many clubs in Europe throughout the transfer season. Meanwhile, Saudi Pro League clubs targeted Alisson by offering him a highly lucrative deal to leave Merseyside.
Liverpool have already implemented a future plan by targeting Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, a highly-reputed goalkeeper. Mamardashvili is earning only €28,846 per week at Valencia despite his incredible potential and reputation in Europe.
Liverpool’s pursuit of the 23-year-old worried the fans as they adore Alisson, considering him the best goalkeeper in the world. The Reds fans understand that Mamardashvili is an incredible coup for the club but where that leaves Alisson worries them.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Alisson assured the fans that the club reached out to him and he agreed with them. He said:
We are not going to last forever here, I am getting old! No, for a goalkeeper I am still young, I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club and I want to give to the club as much as I can. But they have to prepare for the future. They have and they will do for different positions as well. We have so many important players with the contract expiring and the club needs to organise themselves. I think it was a good idea, I knew about [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think.”
The 31-year-old further assured the fans that both he and his family are happy at Liverpool. He added:
“But they are doing the right thing in my point of view, but, on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, I will stay.”
