Liverpool are the only club in Europe without a single signing so far this summer despite going through a staff transition. New head coach Arne Slot used July’s pre-season tour to assess the fully squad that he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds suffered a late dip in form last season that raised many eyebrows as fans patiently waited for improvement. However, after the failed Martin Zubimendi saga this month, things have gone quiet in the transfer market for the Reds.
During the start of the summer, journalists highlighted that Liverpool are targeting a holding midfielder, a left-central defender and an attacker. However, the only thing the club has done is sell their fringe and academy players for a respectable value.
According to Fichajes, Liverpool wants Chelsea star Levi Colwill as the left centre-back but only if Joe Gomez decides to leave. The Reds and Newcastle United almost reached an agreement over Gomez for £45 million, the valuation that Liverpool have put.
Liverpool have captain Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Gomez as the defensive options for the next season. Konate, Quansah and Gomez naturally play as the right centre-back which leaves only Van Dijk as the option for left.
Furthermore, Konate is a perennial injury and fitness concern and requires proper rotation to make sure he is consistently available. Liverpool lacks a left-footed centre-back option and Colwill fits that criteria alongside his young age and high potential.
Van Dijk is 33 years of age and currently playing in the last year of his contract with uncertainty looming over him. Irrespective of Liverpool’s decision on Van Dijk, they need a left-footed centre-back who fits the profile that Slot desires.

Transfermarkt puts Colwill’s value at €50 million which is reasonable due to his age and nationality as English players’ prices are inflated. However, Chelsea and Liverpool are competitive rivals and lack a good relationship which could make the potential negotiations tricky.
