Liverpool usurp passing record in win over Brentford

Arne Slot’s time as the Liverpool head coach is off to the best possible start as the Dutchman has already overseen two successive wins in the Premier League, both coming with 2-0 scores over Ipswich Town and Brentford.

While admittedly the six points were picked up against relatively easier opposition, the Reds are still not fully oiled under their new manager and remain a work in progress just a week into the 2024-25 season.

However, statistics platform Squawka has revealed that the team is already beating records in the Premier League. This time it is an achievement which has not been recorded in 20 years, as Liverpool completed 92% of their 602 attempted passes against the Bees. It is their highest passing accuracy since records started being maintained in 2003-04.

A number of clubs in the Premier League are employing a similar model to that of Pep Guardiola. Enzo Maresca, Erik ten Hag and Mikel Arteta, some of the other managers of title contenders, have all worked with the Spaniard at some point in their careers.

Though Slot does not have that experience, he has a rich coaching history in the Netherlands, whose legendary icon Johan Cruyff was a big inspiration to Pep Guardiola and the style of football he has been employing over the last 15 odd years.

Liverpool are looking like a more balanced team this season on the pitch as they are more dominant on the ball, as opposed to being more dangerous with their pressing off it under Jurgen Klopp, whose approach was also a bit riskier.

The visit to Manchester United on matchday three will be Arne Slot’s biggest test as Liverpool head coach but if he is to upset his compatriot Ten Hag at Old Trafford next weekend, the 45-year-old could be one of the managers to beat in the Premier League this season.
