Jonathan David on Liverpool’s radar before Deadline Day

As the transfer window draws to a close, Liverpool are beginning to show a bit more urgency as far as player incomings are concerned. Giorgi Mamardashvili’s signing is practically across the line with only a medical pending, while an attempt is also being made into Federico Chiesa’s purchase from Juventus.

Caught Offside has reported that a third player is on Liverpool’s radar – Jonathan David – after a breakthrough season with Lille in 2023/24. The Reds are pondering over the addition of an attacking option before the transfer window draws to a close and the Canadian international is seen as a long-term option.

Lille’s asking price for David is reportedly set in the range of €45 to €50 million, while the Reds are planning on offering the forward a four or five-year stay at Anfield.

There is competition for David’s services with Arsenal as well as Napoli keen. The Serie A outfit had agreed personal terms with the player but were unwilling to match Lille’s asking price for his transfer.

With Antonio Conte nearing a reunion with Romelu Lukaku, there is a likelihood that Napoli cool interest in David but Arsenal’s stance is unlikely to change with Mikel Arteta looking for a striker as well before the transfer window.

Liverpool are said to be keeping tabs on him, but it is debatable whether or not they require a new name in attack, especially when it is a player that is not capable of playing on the right wing – a position they need to plan for after Mohamed Salah.

Instead, channeling their energy towards trying to find a midfielder would be a far better idea. The club has not been linked with any alternatives after a deal for Martin Zubimendi fell through but arguably, the engine room remains Arne Slot’s biggest area of concern.
