Liverpool have enjoyed a good start to their season despite the summer transfer activities or lack thereof taking the spotlight. The Reds beat newly promoted Ipswich Town in their Premier League opener followed by a victory over Brentford at Anfield.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot implemented a new tactical style within the team while the philosophy remained the same as before. Slot inherited a strong squad from Jurgen Klopp that required mild tinkering during the transfer season with few necessary requirements.
However, the Reds struggled to pinpoint suitable candidates who are both available and capable of adding quality to the squad. While the situation annoyed a section of the fanbase, Liverpool signed star forward Federico Chiesa while securing the goalkeeping department’s future.
They signed Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for the 2025-26 season as he stayed at his current club on a loan. Liverpool tried to sign Real Sociedad defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi but failed in their chase which attracted bad media attention.
However, Slot found a solution within the team by playing Ryan Gravenberch in the number six role where he impressed. It doesn’t change the fact that the real tests are waiting to happen as Liverpool faces the most brutal fixture.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Slot highlighted the two ways to improve the squad and signing is not the only way. He said:
“There are two ways of improving and strengthening the squad, and one of them is absolutely on the training pitch. And the second one could be bringing in new players, but I said many times before, it’s not so easy to bring in players of our standards at this club because the players I already have are from a really high standard.
Almost every position we have double in, so there’s not much need for us to do a lot in the market, and only if we see there’s a real good chance for us to improve the team and the player wants to come to us, then we act. And I’ve been very happy until now with the players I have, and I think they’ve earned this trust in the first two games.”
Slot’s men will face historical rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford which is a good test for the head coach. The Reds are the only team in the Premier League who have not conceded a single goal until now.
While United have struggled with form, they are still a threat after the numerous signings they have made this summer. Man United apply the counter-attacking style of play even in home games which Liverpool needs to nullify on Sunday.

Liverpool have a strong depth in the squad which could maintain itself with a good rotation policy and under the new tactics. Slot prefers calmness and efficiency over directness and constant attack which could help decrease injury problems within the team.
