Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag has carried on as an anomaly, outlasting legendary Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in the job. Of course, Klopp left on his terms while Ten Hag carries on as a betting favourite for the sack.
However, the Man United boss continues to boast his accomplishments at Old Trafford, much to the amusement of the Liverpool fans. Meanwhile, Liverpool have endured several ups and downs in the last couple of seasons while continuing to compete for everything.
The Reds have always worked under a restricted budget compared to their high-spending rivals which includes both the Manchester clubs. While Manchester City have enjoyed dominance under Pep Guardiola, United continues to revamp their squad every summer with big signings.
United finished above Liverpool by just eight points in Ten Hag’s first season despite the vast difference in the situation. Liverpool’s side involved multiple players aged past their prime while Ten Hag spent enormous money in signing fresh faces.
Last season, Liverpool competed for every trophy including the Premier League while winning the Carabao Cup by beating rivals Chelsea. At the same time, Ten Hag’s United imploded, finishing eighth and suffering embarrassing defeats in the Champions League.
They won the FA Cup in a controversial fashion in a final against Manchester City that involved a game-changing decision. United defeated a tired Liverpool side in the Quarter-finals of the tournament and controversially beat championship side Coventry.
The referees disallowed a late goal by Coventry at the end of the extra time that should have won them the tie. Ten Hag enjoyed the second trophy of his United career after winning the Carabao Cup in the first season. Nevertheless, the reality is evident among all the football fans that the Dutchman’s tenure has disaster than a success until now.
That has not stopped Ten Hag from bragging, highlighting (via DaveOCKOP’s X) his success as second to only Man City. He said:
“Behind City, we won the most trophies over the last two years, so we performed better than anyone else. Those are the facts.”
Hopefully, the proud United manager would “perform better” than Liverpool instead of parking the bus on Sunday. He played a deep defensive strategy against the Reds last season at Anfield which even annoyed United fans and pundits.
