Liverpool have beaten their arch-rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, making an emphatic early statement for the new season. They have won three Premier League games in a row, staying as the only team not to concede a goal.
The Reds started the game on a backfoot as Man United tried to use the home environment in their favour. However, Liverpool gradually changed the momentum to their favour and used their high-pressing style to disrupt movements and regain dominance.
Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 35th minute after legendary attacker Mohamed Salah provided an inch-perfect assist to Luis Diaz. The Reds doubled their lead before halftime with another goal from Diaz through the second assist for the Egyptian.
The 32-year-old continued to haunt the right flank with his attacking flair and scored a fantastic goal in the second half. Salah has three goals and three assists from the three Premier League games so far, showcasing that class is permanent.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the 0-3 victory over Man United, Salah addressed his future that raised many eyebrows. He said:
“As you know, it’s my last year at the club. I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.”
The Egypt captain is currently playing in the last year of his current contract which earns him £350,000 per week. Liverpool are facing a similar contractual situation with captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold despite their respective importance.
The Reds cannot afford to lose three of their core players on a free transfer after this season. The club needs to make these decisions based on a thorough practical assessment, not on sentiments and emotions.

However, no one can question that Salah has maintained the level of consistency that Liverpool requires despite his late struggles last season. The 32-year-old has continuously adapted his game according to his age and the physical changes that come with it. Rest assured, a mutually beneficial contract would allow Liverpool fans to cherish Salah for more seasons or allow the club to sell him for a substantial amount that he governs.
