Liverpool have started the new Premier League season in the dominating fashion despite their struggles during the summer transfer window. The Reds have registered three wins from three games while staying as the only club not to concede a goal.
Arne Slot succeeded legendary manager Jurgen Klopp during the summer and assessed the squad he acquired during the pre-season tour. The hierarchy has drastically changed at Liverpool with the new appointment as they appointed Slot as the new head coach.
The new hierarchy compartmentalized roles and responsibilities within the club as new sporting director Richard Hughes commanded the transfer dealings. Hughes faced heavy scrutiny this summer after Liverpool failed to sign their priority target and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
Liverpool targeted a number six midfielder as that area lacked the depth with only Wataru Endo as the natural option. The Reds also have Tyler Morton available but the young midfielder is also a cover for that role like Endo.
Many names emerged as the potential number six options for the Reds during the summer which included Genoa’s Morten Frendrup. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder enjoyed a fantastic season for the Italian side in the Serie A last season.
He helped Genoa stay in the Serie A after helping them earn the promotion from Serie B before last season. The Danish midfielder earned praise for his defensive contributions, making significantly high tackles and interceptions compared to his rival midfielders.
Speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Frendrup clarified the interest from Liverpool in him during the summer transfer window. He said:
“It’s obviously a huge club, but it’s a long way from concrete interest. For me, it’s about doing as well as possible. So, everything else is up to my agent.”
The 23-year-old is a textbook defensive midfielder who prioritises the defensive duty and leaves responsibilities in possession to his teammates. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s new head coach Slot desires a defensive midfielder who contributes to possessional play while also fulfilling defensive tasks.

Frendrup has immense potential and a fantastic future ahead of him but the €19,808 per week midfielder does not fit Liverpool’s profile. With the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch in the number six role this season, Liverpool have found a good answer from within their squad.
