Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot has dropped out of the England U-21 squad for “further medical assessment.”
Liverpool players have headed off for international duty having enjoyed a fantastic 3-0 win over arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Arne Slot may have wanted to work with his players after Sunday’s dominating win over Man United. The Dutchman’s side is now the only team to not concede a goal so far in the Premier League and one of just two teams alongside Manchester City to have won all three opening games so far in the campaign. So, he would have not wanted to disrupt the momentum in which the Reds have been playing.
The September international break always feels a little frustrating. The new Premier League campaign is just three games old, but players are now heading away with their countries. However, one of them might not be able to do that after dropping out of the squad due to a fitness issue.
According to the update provided by the England FA on their official X account, Harvey Elliot has dropped from the England under-21 squad and returned to Liverpool because of “further medical assessment”.
Harvey Elliott was in line for valuable minutes with the England under-21s over the next week but unfortunately, it was not meant to be. The midfielder was called up to represent England under-21s alongside Liverpool teammates Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton for their Euro qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Austria.
The England youth international has barely featured for Slot’s Liverpool this season, managing just seven minutes across three Premier League games. He was an unused substitute in the Reds’ win over Man United at Old Trafford last weekend.
Elliot would have loved to represent his nation after limited playing time at the club. After dropping out of the England under-21 squad, he could now be in doubt for Liverpool’s return to action. Slot’s red army will play seven games in 22 days across three competitions after the end of September’s international break and, with rotation likely to come into effect, Elliott was expected to get his opportunity to impress.

The left-footed midfielder will now focus on recovery ahead of Liverpool’s return to action against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on September 14. We can only hope Elliot’s injury is not severe and he can get back to full fitness as quickly as possible.
