Liverpool entered the international break on a high note, with several players leaving to represent their countries in UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualifiers. Over the years, football’s increasingly tight schedules have taken their toll on players, leading to inevitable wear and tear. Fatigue has become a growing issue, often resulting in injuries to full-time players. Unfortunately, the latest to fall victim to this is Liverpool’s No. 10, Alexis Mac Allister.

Argentina faced Chile in a FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier on September 5, 2024. Mac Allister, who had missed training sessions due to injury concerns, surprisingly featured in the game and even managed to score the opener in Argentina’s 3-0 victory. However, the situation took a turn for the worse in the last quarter of the match, as Mac Allister appeared to struggle with his fitness.

The extent of his injury and its potential impact on Liverpool remains to be seen, but it’s a concerning development for the Reds as they face an already packed schedule this season.

Mac Allister was visibly in discomfort as he left the pitch, prompting Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni to substitute him in the final 10 minutes of the game. The midfielder, who played a crucial role in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier and Liverpool’s dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester United, is now doubtful for Argentina’s next match.

In the aftermath of the game, Scaloni addressed the situation, stating via Evening Standard:

“We still don’t know how Nico (Gonzalez) and Alexis are because they had discomfort, we’ll see if they can play against Colombia.”

“It always happens to us, they come out to do their part. We’ll wait and see how he responds today. It doesn’t change our way of playing much because we’ll stay the same, but it’s true that he gives us play, set-pieces. The rest of the team is more or less decided.”

A Long Month for Liverpool awaits

Argentina’s upcoming clash with Colombia on Tuesday will see Liverpool teammates Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister face off on the international stage. Both players have hit their stride in the Premier League this season, with Liverpool enjoying a 100% record and no goals conceded after three matchdays. Fans at Merseyside will be holding their breath, hoping that Mac Allister’s recent injury concern isn’t a major setback. Since his arrival, the Argentine has been instrumental in Liverpool’s midfield, and his absence would certainly be felt.
