Salah’s salary could cause issues at Liverpool, Deeney says
Mohamed Salah is in the final year of his contract at Liverpool but continues to be as important as ever, with three goals and three assists in as many Premier League games to start 2024/25. He was particularly impressive against Manchester United in the team’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford as he got two assists and struck a goal as well.
In the aftermath of the victory, the Egyptian said that the ongoing campaign was his last season at Liverpool as nobody had commenced talks regarding a contract renewal with him. While a number of fans saw it as an early farewell from their Egyptian King, a handful of the supporters saw it as Salah merely tickling the issue in order to expedite negotiations.
Former Premier League star Troy Deeney believes the player’s demand for a contract extension could have ‘rocked the boat’ at Liverpool. He said the following on the situation (h/t Mirror via talkSPORT):
“There was talk in football that [Salah’s] extension rocked the boat a little bit, because it was so far above everybody else that it kind of made Liverpool go hold on – everybody else came to the forefront like ‘where’s my money?'”
Salah is the best-paid player at Anfield, earning a reported sum of £350,000 per week. It recently came to light that the former AS Roma winger remains keen on continuing his career on Merseyside but is hesitant in doing so if it comes at the cost of a pay cut, especially amid news that he has a multimillion dollars’ offer to leave for Saudi Arabia.
Deeney’s words are unlikely to be very accurate as far as the situation in the Reds’ dressing room goes as Salah has inarguably been their best and most consistent player since joining from Roma at the start of the 2017/18 season. Not only has he earned the love and respect of the fans, but he even remains a revered name in the squad.

As such, it is hard to argue against the fact that Salah has deserved his £350,000 weekly wage and it would only be justified if Liverpool continue to pay him just as much should they renew the 32-year-old’s contract beyond next June.
