Liverpool are ready to offer a new contract to their captain Virgil van Dijk, securing his future at the club. The Dutchman is playing in the last season of his current contract which earns him £220,000 per week at Liverpool.
The Reds have a strict policy that goes against giving lucrative contracts who are near the end of their peak. However, Van Dijk is arguably the best defender in the world, continuing his extremely high level of consistency and performance.
Liverpool have started the new season in fantastic form under new head coach Arne Slot, securing three Premier League victories. The Reds are the only club to maintain three important clean sheets and not concede a single goal so far.
Van Dijk has played a crucial role in this defensive stability with his quality and leadership at the Reds’ backline. The Dutch captain’s importance is also immense off the pitch as his reputation brings continuous goodwill towards the Merseyside club.
According to the Spanish publication AS (via Fichajes), Liverpool are ready to secure Van Dijk until the 2027 summer. The 33-year-old has outlined his ambition to lead the club and country for the next two years, backing his professional longevity. He said:
“At both teams I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader! And I certainly want to remain that for the next two years.”
Van Dijk suffered a serious Anterior cruciate ligament injury during the 2020-21 season after a despicable challenge from Jordan Pickford. Many naysayers constantly criticized the 33-year-old as he took time to adjust to his knee after the injury.
However, the Dutchman proved his naysayers wrong by returning to his previous best during the 2023-24 season, dominating the defence. Van Dijk’s aerial dominance, ground competence and incredible influence in possession are crucial for Liverpool under the new head coach.
