Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham praised Liverpool head coach Arne Slot for “cleverly” handling the tricky post-Jurgen Klopp era transition. Legendary manager Klopp departed from Anfield after the end of the last season with Slot already established as the successor.
The emotionally charged months since Klopp announced his departure in January involved the restructuring of the Liverpool hierarchy under FSG. New owners appointed Michael Edwards as the CEO who appointed Richard Hughes as the new sporting director at the club.
Both Edwards and Hughes commenced a thorough search for a new head coach to succeed Klopp, which concluded with Slot. The Dutchman enjoyed success in Eredivisie under a similar financially restricted environment while employing the same philosophy and developmental culture.
Every knowledgeable source from Eredivisie highlights Slot’s innate ability to properly communicate his ideas to the fans and his players. The Liverpool players proved those praises true by highlighting and praising the new head coach for his man management.
Speaking at the launch of Ladbrokes’ “Gaffer of all Accas” (via Mirror), Sheringham revealed the reason he thinks Liverpool are title challengers. He said:
“I think there’s three teams capable of winning the title this year. Man City, Arsenal and, while I was unsure about them, with the new manager coming in, I think Liverpool will be up there. Arne Slot seems to have settled in very nicely. I loved his way of talking. He mentioned Jurgen Klopp in a really clever way; he acknowledged that the fans loved Klopp, he said he loves him too, and he assured the supporters he wouldn’t be changing a lot,” he said. “I bet they couldn’t believe their luck, when he said that. You know, he just dropped that line in beautifully, for me. I thought it was just fantastic, he’s handled the whole situation brilliantly.”
Slot has successfully implemented several changes to make Liverpool play according to his tactics and style of play. The Dutchman’s philosophy is similar to Klopp’s with a high-pressing and attacking brand of football alongside healthy players’ development.
However, Slot prefers a more efficient use of energy and football and asks his players not to constantly attack the opposition. The Dutchman wants the players to conserve their energy and use less direct attacking and counter-attacking style of play.
Nevertheless, Slot is ready to use a variety of tactics according to the opponents he faces and the team he has. The Dutchman inherited a formidable squad from Klopp and only added Federico Chiesa during the summer for the current season.
