While the arrival of a new head coach freshens things around in the dugout, some could face tactical indifferences. With a new mind coming to lead, some disagreements are natural. We’ve seen plenty of incidents where some players struggle under the latest arrived head coach. Something similar to the sequence can be seen at Merseyside in recent events.
Scholes suggests tension between Arne Slot and Trent Alexander-Arnold
As the premier league kicked off last month, there were some indifferences between Arne Slot and the Reds’ vice-captain at the sidelines. Alexander-Arnold was subbed off in the previous quarter of the game and wasn’t shy to express his disagreement. Although Liverpool ended up winning the game, the fullback wasn’t impressed at full-time whistle. In the aftermath of three match days, Scholes has expressed his concerns over the relations between them. Speaking on the recent episode of The Overlap, he said:
The Manchester United legend asked Jamie Carragher: “Do you think Slot likes him?” before claiming: “Because watching that game [against Manchester United], every time he gave the ball away, he’s [Slot] shaking his head, kept looking away [and] turning around to his bench.”
Scholes then added: “Every time when he was trying his long balls, which he can do brilliantly, he kept shaking his head and turning around and I thought f***ing hell, I’m not sure he likes him.”

Although Slot explained his side in the post-game interview explaining how he is trying to protect Trent. But he also took time to mention how he has a backup in Conor Bradley and he would like to use him. This gives out clear intentions that game time for the vice-captain could be sacrificed. Alexander-Arnold clearly seems in good shape as he collected two MOTM awards in the UEFA Nations League.
Alexander-Arnold assisted the opening goal against Finland as he put up a masterclass in both of the games at the International break. After being left out of EURO 2024 despite making it to the squad, he also shut the doubts about being clear as the first choice at fullback. The fullback is currently in his final season of the contract which offers him £180,000 per week. With the links to the Spanish Capital and these nervy situations, Alexander-Arnold might really consider his future.
