The recently-concluded summer transfer window was rather unproductive for Liverpool, to say the least.

Of the two players they signed, one is due to arrive next summer, while the other is a forward his previous employers were desperate to get rid of.

Regarding this second signing, Liverpool coach Arne Slot had some words to offer ahead of his side’s Champions League opener.

Would be a “surprise” if Federico Chiesa starts against Milan, admits Arne Slot

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s opening Champions League game against Milan, Slot talked about, among other things, his new forward signing, Federico Chiesa, even revealing what he though of his chances of featuring against the Rossoneri.

“I always like to bring in quality players and I think he’s [Chiesa] a quality player that combines quality with an enormous work rate. Works hard without the ball and combines this with scoring goals, and he can play several positions.

“He is in our team selection for the first time, it would be a big surprise for everybody if he would start tomorrow. I don’t think you should expect that he will start but he should make a few minutes if we need him.

“He’s been training on his own at Juve for a long time, it’s too early for him to play 90 but hopefully he can make his first minutes in the upcoming fixtures.”

The 26-year-old was only the second confirmed signing made by the Reds in the recently-concluded summer transfer window as he moved to Merseyside from Juventus in a £12.5m move.

Chiesa has signed a four-year, £180k-per-week contract with the club to remain with them till June 2028.

During his time in Turin, Chiesa made 131 appearances for the Rossoneri across all competitions, registering 32 goals and 23 assists.

Take it slow

In order for Liverpool’s calculated risk in taking Chiesa on board to work out, it is absolutely imperative that they take heir time with him.

Injuries have reduced the Italy international to an echo of the player he was merely three summers ago. The talent is obviously there, but rushing things will take him nowhere.

If Chiesa is to feature against Milan at all, it’s best if he comes off the bench.
