Liverpool were a deer in the headlights last summer when they received a sudden yet mammoth bid for Mo Salah from Suadi Arabia last season.

That was a storm they were able to brace, however, and have even managed to keep him on for this season.

However, one of their former players believes that is time at Merseyside is coming to an end.

Glen Johnson believes Mo Salah is nearing Liverpool exit

In a recent statement, former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has admitted he believes Mo Salah will soon leave Liverpool.

Speaking to Betfred, Johnson had this to say on the Egypt international:

“I believe Mo will leave and the other two will stay. Each of them is going to have an endless list of clubs that will want to sign them if they’re available as a free agent and if Liverpool knows that any of them aren’t going to sign a new contract, then I believe they’ve been foolish to not cash in.

“You can’t have players of their calibre walking out on a free. It depends because Mo still has an awful lot to give. He doesn’t play as if he’s 32 years old, so you assume as long as he feels right, that he can continue to play at this level for a couple more years.

“So you hope a move to Saudi Arabia isn’t of interest to him right now. If he’s available for free at the end of the season, then there’ll be a list of exciting clubs all waiting to sign him.”

Johnson on Salah’s situation, as quoted by Liverpool Echo.

Salah’s £350k-per-week Liverpool contract expires next June. He already has three goals and assists each from his first five games this season across all competitions.

Liverpool made a mistake

Most of the money Liverpool generate from player acquisitions comes from player sales. As they’re entering a transitioning period, not knowing whether the Arne Slot appointment will work out in the long term or not, they would certainly have liked to reinforce themselves sightly better this summer than they ultimately did, especially in midfield.

That is something Liverpool would have managed had they sold Mo Salah, a player well into his thirties whose value is only going to depreciate regardless of returns in the here and now (also a player they have got seven seasons out of and still would have made profit from), to Saudi Arabia, where he will inevitably go at some point.

More Liverpool News:

They have taken a huge risk in willing to let Salah go for free. Maybe they get convince him to stick around for a couple more seasons, and maybe that helps them get some silverware, but there is no doubt that they have actively said no to a three-figure sum here, and such a call is highly unlikely to not come back to bite them in the coming years.
